Pacific Palisades, CA
For a superbly appointed and crafted mid-century modern home in Rustic Canyon, this garden had to be both clean and simple in design and naturalistic in its feel. A quiet palette of drought-tolerant shrubs and grasses complement the native oak, sycamore and eucalyptus that reign over the site, while also underscoring the sculptural notes of bamboo, furcraea, Japanese maple, pomegranate, and melaleuca. The garden descends towards the stream at the back of the property through a dining patio and lawn, a pool terrace and an ipe deck that floats over the final slope. Board-formed concrete is used throughout for planters, walls, and a fountain whose three bubbling jets evoke the brook that edges the garden.
