The dilemma was simple: this Brentwood couple wanted a pool, but loved plants. The solution, for this relatively shallow lot, was a long lap pool and spa set within mixed borders. Using every available inch, and transforming the rear fence into an arbor for various bougainvillea and other vines, we were able to layer the planting to create a lush, colorful world through which to swim. An existing patio was reconfigured to allow ample space for lounging, dining, cooking, and sun-bathing. In front, overgrown trees and a tired lawn were replaced with a drought-tolerant meadow, fruit trees, and plenty of seasonal bloom that better suited the ranch house architecture.
